Two birders walking a coastal path with binoculars in bright early-morning light
Image · About hero (1672×940) The people, not the product: two birders walking a coastal or heathland path in bright early light, binoculars in hand, relaxed and unposed. Figures small-ish in the right third; big open landscape on the left for the headline.

About

Made by a small team who watch birds.

ChirpOMatic is built by Spiny Software, an independent studio that has spent years making careful, specialist tools for birders - not a big platform with a bird app bolted on the side.

Spiny Software

A specialist, not an institution.

We are a small British studio, and birdsong is most of what we do. Alongside ChirpOMatic we make Chirp! Bird Songs, Birds of Britain and the iSpiny field guides - so the reference sounds, the descriptions and the analyser all come from people who spend their weekends doing exactly what you do with the app.

Being small is the point. It lets us build for the difficult recordings and the endemic species a larger, more general dataset skips over - and answer to birders rather than to a platform.

Also by Spiny

The rest of the aviary.

ChirpOMatic sits alongside a small family of bird and nature apps from the same studio - the reason its sounds and descriptions come from people who already know the birds.

Chirp! Bird Songs

Learn the songs and calls by ear, then test yourself with the quiz.

Birds of Britain

A pocket photographic field guide to the birds you are likely to meet.

iSpiny Guides

The wider range of natural-history field guides from the same studio.

What we care about

Getting it right, quietly.

  • The bird comes first - bird-safe mode is a default, not an afterthought
  • Your data is yours - no account required, nothing sold on
  • Honest answers - a shortlist of likely matches and a confidence label, rather than a single confident guess
  • Native and endemic species - the birds other datasets may not include

Say hello

Questions, or just want to know more about what we do?

We would genuinely love to hear from birders using the app - what works, what does not, and which species you wish it knew.
